Polar Bears
Polar bears live on ice and snow. But the cold is not a problem. These bears have some cool ways to keep warm!
Hair – Their hair keeps them warm. They have an outer coat of long hair and a thick undercoat of fur.
Fat – Their thick fat stops them from feeling cold on land and in the sea. This fat may also help the bears float in the sea.
Shelter – When the weather is very bad, a polar bear may dig a shelter. It will stay in the shelter for a few days. In the winter, mother polar bears stay under the snow in dens. While in the den, the polar bear takes care of her cubs.
When cubs are born they are very small and hairless. They need the mum to keep them warm and fed. Their mum's milk has a lot of fat in it. This helps the cubs grow quickly.
By April they start exploring with their mum outside the den.
When they are 2 years old, they are ready to be on their own.
A polar bear can swim non-stop for days.
