Brown bears
A brown bear can stand up. When it is standing it can be taller than a person.
They have big paws. Their front paws have strong, long claws.
This makes them good diggers.
Baby bears can climb trees with their long claws. But when they get bigger they are too heavy to climb.
Bears have sharp, pointy teeth at the front and flat teeth at the back.
Brown bears live in forests and in open fields. They eat nuts, berries, fruit, leaves, and roots. They are good swimmers and like to go to rivers to catch fish.
Bears can eat different kinds of animals – even a moose!

Bears have fur made up of lots of hair. Their fur is thick in the autumn and winter, when it is cold. The thick fur keeps them warm.
In the spring and summer it is much warmer. Then brown bears don't need such a thick coat of fur. So some hair falls off and their fur gets thinner.
In the winter there is not much food for brown bears to eat, so they go into their dens for a long sleep.
This sleep lasts for half a year. In the den the mother bear may give birth to babies. Baby bears are called cubs. Brown bear cubs drink their mum's milk until spring.
The cubs stay with her for about 2 years.
Bears live alone unless they have babies.
Brown bears have a good sense of hearing and smell, but cannot see well.
