Koalas
Koalas look a little like teddy bears, but they are not bears.

Koalas live in forests in Australia.
They live in eucalyptus trees. They eat the trees' leaves.

Their big noses make them good at smelling. They smell leaves to choose leaves to eat. The smell of a eucalyptus leaf tells them if it's bad and will make them ill.*

Koalas don't have much energy. They spend their time eating leaves and sleeping. They can sleep for up to 18 hours a day!

Koalas can climb trees as they have sharp claws. Their thick fur keeps them dry in the rain.

They spend a lot of time alone unless they have babies. A mother koala carries her baby in her pouch. She carries her baby for a few months after its birth.
This baby koala is inside its mother's pouch.
A baby koala is called a joey. The joey drinks its mother's milk. When a joey is strong enough it leaves the pouch and clings to its mother's back.
