Orangutan means person of the forest. An orangutan is not a monkey. It is a type of great ape. Apes are smart animals that are related to us. They do not have tails. |

Orangutans have long, strong arms. When an orangutan stands up its arms almost touch the ground. Their legs are weak and shorter than their arms.
They live in trees. They use their long arms to climb and swing from tree to tree. They sleep in the trees and get their food from the trees. They like to eat insects, leaves and fruit.

First they strip leaves from a twig. Then they fit the twig into holes to scrape out termites.
Sometimes when it's raining they put a very big leaf on their head like a hat!
Adult orangutans like to live alone but mothers stay with their young for up to 8 years. This gives their young the time to learn the skills they need to survive on their own.
