Lions live in Africa. They are called the king of the jungle but most lions live on grasslands. Some lions live in the Kalahari Desert.

A group of lions is called a pride. A pride has many adult females and their young, and a few adult males. There can be up to 30 lions in a pride.
A young lion is called a cub.
An adult male has long hair around his head.

A female lion is called a lioness.
The lionesses rule the pride. They work together to look after the cubs and to hunt for food. Lionesses do most of the hunting.
A mum picks up the cubs with her mouth. She does not hurt the cub.
The dads have an important job too. They guard the pride and protect its territory.
Lions are good climbers. They climb trees to look for prey.
Lions can sleep in trees.
Lions sleep 20 hours a day! They are awake for just 4 hours.
Lions hunt big animals such as zebras, wildebeest and buffalo. Lions can run fast to catch their prey. They can run as fast as a car. |
